Compared with a great deal of traditional desulphunzation crafts, the catalytic reduction of SO_2 with CO to elemental sulfur is considered to be the best technology for the removal of SO_2 from flue gas. Adding rare earth oxide CeO_2 with variable valences to La_2O_3 formed a mixture of rare earth oxides. By means of dipping CeO_2, La_2O_3 and their mixture, whose carriers are ally-Al_2O_3, are used as the catalyst for the reduction of SO_2 by CO. The activation process of this catalyst without O_2 was investigated. The result shows that the rare earth oxide mixture composing of CeO_2 and La_2O_3, as the catalyst for the reduction of SO_2 by CO, can remove SO_2 mostly without O_2.
