The proceedings contain fifteen papers that review various aspects of rock friction that have application to earthquake prediction. A compilation of the criticisms made at the conference during the presentation of the papers is also included. In addition,the proceedings contain a short note of each participant at the conference on the topics perceived to require further research. Two appendices are included which contain six papers that were not given at the conference but address various aspects of rock deformation both in laboratory experiments and on natural faults in the earth.
