Originated from early boatbuilding. It was a product that combined hemp rope stuffed into a crack on the boat hull and sealed with a bituminous/tar product. Later the term was applied to a natural oil, such as linseed, filled with calcium carbonate to form a paste. Now the term generally refers to an all purpose "low grade" product or "Painters Caulk".
