Australian Standards and Regulations contain requirements for the first year inspection of new pressure vessels. Traditional inspection by direct vessel entry can incur major effort and costs. Alternatively, this inspection may be deferred under AS/NZS 3788 if determined acceptable to do so by using a Risk Based Inspection (RBI) process. Such a process was recently applied to the vessels in a new Hydrogen Plant. Technically justifiable deferrals on a number of vessels were produced and targeted Inspection Plans for the remaining vessels developed. Advanced non-intrusive inspection techniques were used on catalyst-filled vessels which further reduced shutdown costs. A major component material non-conformance was also identified thereby averting a potentially significant High Temperature Hydrogen Attack issue.
