The exposure of pollution as the ice and snow is relevant ambient factor for the dielectric reliability of the post insulator on AIS installation especially in HVDC. This exposure affects also the elements that use post insulators like disconnector and bus- bar support. In particular, this paper analyzes the effect of icing on post insulator. The station insulators are generally used as bus station support and on disconnector products. Generally, this kind insulators are in porcelain or in composite and also hybrid solution are on the market. Post insulators and its relevant dimensioning is typically supported by standards (e.g. IEC 60273 IEC 60507 etc...) taking into account the service condition required such as electrical, mechanical exposure to pollution and ambient condition during the service. Actually, on literature reports on post insulators subjected to icing are limited. In the paper results of test performed on post insulators, based on IEEE 1783 Standard are reported showing the influence of the different testing parameters. These tests give useful information for design of post insulators subjected to icing.
