During and for some time after volcanic ashfalls, electric power systems are vulnerable to a number of impacts, with disruption from ash-induced insulator flashover being the most common Volcanic ash is a nonstandard type of contamination, which is not covered by existing knowledge in IEC 60815-1. Despite ample anecdotal evidence, little data exists on the electrical properties of volcanic ash and its effect on the pollution performance of HV outdoor insulators. To provide more information on the subject, this article summarises (1) important physical, chemical and electrical properties of volcanic ash in relation to known standard pollution characteristics, (2) results from an investigation by STRI into the possible effects of the 2010 Eyjafjallajokull ash fallout on HV insulation in Scandinavia, and (3) results from laboratory experiments at the University of Canterbury (UC) investigating the influence of volcanic ash contamination on the pollution performance of three different ceramic insulators.
