Silicone composite insulator technology has been meeting T&D challenges for almost 40 years by enhancing the ability of insulator designs to withstand electrical and environmental stresses. Materials used in these designs are critical to the function and lifecycle of the insulator as well as in their manufacture. The process has to be repeatable, robust and produce parts that exceed the standards that are of the IEC, CIGRE and IEEE with guidance from EPRI and utilities. These are all important factors to consider when developing silicone formulations for these applications. Wacker Chemie is a major chemical manufacturer with more than 60 years of experience in synthesizing and formulating silicones. Our focus on T&D activities has benefitted from R&D investment and a focus on the technical support of customers. The meshing of R&D investment with customer needs and market demands has resulted in many opportunities. Wacker has partnered with other companies to develop and refine novel application engineering methods and exposed the technical staff to molding and processing equipment. More importantly, these partnerships continue to provide access to trends which allows us to modify our approach to formulating and supporting the market.
