Feasibility of Cladding Ti to Carbon Steel by Diffusion Bonding Followed by Hot-rolling

Ti was diffusion-bonded to a grade of carbon steel containing about 0.13 wt% C. The diffusion-bonded specimen was then hot-rolled to a final reduction in thickness of about 71%. There were no delaminations during hot-rolling. The cross sectional microstructures of specimens before and after hot-rolling were characterised using scanning electron microscopy, energy dispersive spectroscopy and optical microscopy. It was proved that it is technically feasible to produce Ti-clad carbon steel plates using a process of diffusion bonding followed by hot-rolling. It was also demonstrated that normal heat treatment procedures involving quenching and tempering can be applied to Ti-clad carbon steels after hot-rolling. The bond strength of the claddings would be determined by the intermetallic compound phases formed at the interface between Ti and carbon steel, which could be optimised by adjusting the conditions of diffusion bonding and hot rolling processes.
