Features of Metabolic Syndrome in a Mediterranean Countryside Population

Features of metabolic syndrome may diverge in different geographic areas. The aim of our study was to investigate the features of metabolic syndrome in a sample of a Mediterranean countryside population. On the basis of clinical and biochemical results, 128 asymptomatic subjects were divided into 2 groups: 72 subjects (34 M, 38 F, age 57+-13 years) with metabolic syndrome (defined according to ATP III criteria) and 56 subjects (27 M, 29 F, age 51+-13 years) without metabolic syndrome. Age and pulse pressure were higher in subjects with metabolic syndrome, who had also a higher prevalence of ECG abnormalities. On the contrary, family history of cardiovascular disease was prevalent in subjects without metabolic syndrome.
