Cancers of the Colon and Rectum: Multidisciplinary Treatment from the Medical Oncologist's Perspective

The aim of systemic therapy for patients with borderline resectable colorectal liver metastases (CLM) is to achieve potentially curative surgical resection. As a positive correlation is suggested between response rate and resection rate for these patients, selection of the most active and appropriate treatment regimen is the key to attaining this goal. However, although high response rates are required in order to proceed to surgical resection, for many patients this will not occur, and therefore it is necessary to be aware that treatment takes place as part of a continuum for unresectable metastatic disease.
