THE IMPACT OF KARST ON AGRICULTURE

The impact of agriculture and other human activities on karst aquifers, landscapes, and processes has been extensively documented. In the opposite sense, karst imposes profound constraints on human activities. Modern, high intensity agriculture works best on large areas of perfectly flat loam that is well-watered and adequately drained. All of these conditions are problematic in karst. In this presentation, we will outline some of the constraints karst imposes on agriculture.
