摘要

Total knee replacement (TKR) is a common and very successful surgical procedure for managing end-stage osteoarthritis in humans, improving quality of life in around 90% of patients.1 The earliest reports on canine TKR came from laboratory studies in which the dog was used as a preclinical model for testing novel strategies for cementless implant fixation in humans.2"5 In 2007, a case report was published in which a custom TKR implant was used to treat a working dog that had developed a chronic, comminuted femoral non-union secondary to a gunshot injury.6 The implant used in that original case was subsequently adapted and commercialized as the first modular canine TKR implant system (Canine Total Knee; BioMedtrix, Boonton, NJ). This implant has now been used in approximately 300 cases around the world, and although it has not yet been possible to obtain long-term follow up on many of these dogs, clinical results have been very encouraging. That said, a number of complications have been seen during or following TKR in dogs.
