Composition Analysis of Asphalt Mixture High Temperature Shear Strength

Shear strength is the key parameter of asphalt mixture at high temperatures, which has great correlation with the high temperature performance of asphalt pavement. According to the Mohr Coulomb damage theory, the shear strength of asphalt mixture is the function of cohesion C and friction angle cp. However, it is still debated as to which of these two parameters has a more significant effect on the shear strength of asphalt mixture at high temperatures. Sixteen asphalt mixtures composed of different types of asphalt binder and aggregate gradation were selected for the unconfined compression test and indirect tensile test at 60°C. The cohesion C and friction angle ψ were calculated based on the test results. According to the results of the Chinese standard wheel tracking test T0719-1993 and combined with the grey relational analysis, the results show that the cohesion C had a more significant effect on the high temperature performance of asphalt mixture than the friction angle cp. The variance analysis was applied to analyze the effect of asphalt mortar and aggregate gradation on the high temperature performance of asphalt mixture and the results show that the asphalt mortar had a more significant effect on the high temperature performance of asphalt mixtures than the aggregate gradation.
