Pd nanoparticles with mean sizes less than 5 nm were prepared with and without stabilizer by using CO as a reducing agent, and used for preparing Pd core/Pt shell-loaded carbon black (Pt_x/Pd/CB). The acitivity and durability of the Pt_x/Pd/CB as the cathode catalyst in polymer electrolyte fuel cells (PEFCs) were evaluated. The Pt_x/Pd/CB prepared from Pd nanoparticles without stabilizer had much higher mass activity than the Pt_x/Pd/CB catalysts prepared from Pd nanoparticles including polyvinylpyrrolidone as a stabilizer and commercial Pt/CB. The durability of the Pt_x/Pd/CB prepared from Pd nanoparticles without stabilizer was almost equivalent or superior to the commercial Pt/CB.
