Factors affecting the hearing and language development in children with cochlear implant: theoretical study

To present a review of the main variables which should be considered in order to facilitate hearing and language development in cases of deaf children with cochlear implant. Material and methods: Review of literature on the cochlear implant children from 20 international journals. Results: The main predictors obtained are: the age at which they received the implant; the disorders associated with deafness; the cognitive ability and the serious failure of the device. Conclusions: The knowledge of the factors that predict the outcome of cochlear implantation in children is of utmost importance. It can help medical teams and speech therapists to foresee, to some extent, the development of deaf children who receive a cochlear implant. Nonetheless, there is still too much variability in the results of the studies.
