摘要

The objective of this paper is to describe the role of pump sump model test to help achieve efficient and effective water management. In Malaysia, water management is critical as we experience uneven rainfall distribution throughout the year. Whereas, the monsoon season may create floods, the dry season on the other hand brings droughts and inadequate water supply. For Kerian area, the management of water is more important because the land is agriculture based. Efficient and effective water management is critical to ensure successful plantations and yield of crops. Kerian Irrigation Scheme is now under a program for upgrading and modernization. Sungai Bogak Pumphouse as part of the irrigation scheme supplies about 14 percent of irrigation water for the scheme. It is now in the process of upgrading of pumping station to achieve 60% irrigation efficiency than the current 45%. Before the new pump is installed, a pump sump model test is carried out to ensure that the existing pump sump can cope and will not cause any other related problems to the flow distribution, swirl and vortices. The ‘what’ and ‘how’ of the testing is to evaluate the designed pump bay performance and proposed modifications to optimize intake flow conditions are described in the paper.
