This paper describes the results and experience of developing, deploying, and testing a 250 kW, 1 MW-hr iron-chromium redox flow battery (RFB) at the EnerVault "Turlock" site. The purpose of the project was to demonstrate the functionality and scalability of long-duration, ironchromium RFB technology, as well as demonstrate the capability of the system for integration of solar, time-shifting, and peak demand management. The project was partially funded by the United States Department of Energy and the California Energy Commission, and resulted in the successful installation and start-up of the first megawatt-hour scale iron-chromium RFB in the world.
