Robotics is fun; It is possible to start with small systems and applications; These may have considerable entertainment value and be quite artistics; And move onto more challenging and ambitious applications; With affordable embedded Linux platforms emerging it is possible to experiment with frameworks such as URBI and Orocos and Tekkotsu; Also note the use of fairly powerful microcontroller and FPGA based sensor systems; I make a special plea for innovators to develop cost effective robot arm controller components; The Robotis Dynamixel servos are very fine, but they can be improved upon; Also it would be nice to have affordable hydraulic, pneumatic and linear electric drive actuators.
