1. Define the process objective: i.e. homogeneous melt, mixing quality, devolitalization, discharge pressure generation, etc. 2. Select appropriate machine geometry: Do/Di ratio, L/D -Determine any obvious process limitations such as feed volume, mixing energy, surface regeneration etc. -Minimize the wetted length of the process 3. Organize the proper sequencing of unit operations -don't overlook feed stream location. 4. Choose the most effective / efficient elements for the task.
