Natural Ester Dielectric Coolants for Small, Medium Large Power Class Transformers: Review of the First Fifteen Years Predictions for the Future

Natural ester dielectric fluids are increasingly used in power class transformers, both new and retrofilled. It is estimated there are now over 15,000 small power, and over 200 medium/large power transformers, in addition to the over 300,000 distribution class transformers filled with natural esters. This paper summarizes the development, testing, field experience, codes and standards particularly as it relates to medium and large power class applications of natural esters, including LTC experience and testing. With the trend toward improved fire and environmental safety and sustainable supply of power delivery, supported by very favorable field experience, it appears that the demand growth will continue to accelerate in North America and globally. New developments in chemistry, processing, and farming, including genetic engineering, will lead to improved properties and economics.
