The Role of Natural Gas in the Low Carbon Economy – (PPT)

Recent advances in drilling technology, along with increased natural gas prices, resulted in an exploration boom in the U.S. Estimates of economically recoverable natural gas in the U.S. have increased by several thousand TCF. U.S. policymakers increasingly are looking to natural gas as the fuel of choice for electricity baseload generation. With less than 50% the CO_2 emissions of coal and lower emissions of NO_x, SO_x, and mercury, gas is viewed as the clean alternative to coal. Electricity generation with gas uses less water than coal-fired generation. Natural gas generation is a far better fit for systems with significant wind power. With an abundant shale gas supply worldwide, other nations should be exploring the substitution of natural gas for coal as a fuel for baseload generation.
