The new Audi A8 will be equipped with a Shift-by-wire automatic transmission and a Shift-bywire shifting operation. Audi used this technological change in order to develop and realize an innovative operational concept with an attractive design in co-operation with ZF. The shifting operation includes an electronic control unit for the signal analysis, the transmission communication as well as all operational and diagnostic functions of the shifting operation, leading to high demands regarding functional safety and availability. The main development objectives: maximum ease of use with a minimum effort of adoption to the new operation concept as well as avoidance of misuse. Additional functions such as MMI operation by using the selector lever as hand rest or the integration of the gear indicator display into the gearshift lever had to be realized - with particular attention on appealing design, optimal haptics and acoustics using minimal space in the center console. The high-quality development of this product was ensured by working to the Automotive SPICE system.
