Fisheries and aquaculture make important contributions to meeting the UN Millennium Development Goals (MDGs) on poverty reduction and food security and can be a source of wealth creation, supporting national economic development. In general small-scale fisheries and aquaculture are more directly contributing to attaining these goals than industrial-scale operations even though the economic contribution of the latter can be significant at the national level. In order to sustain and enhance these contributions, a policy environment that enables responsible fisheries and sustainable aquaculture is required together with efforts that actively promote innovative, practical and participatory approaches to resource management and development.
