This paper proposes a combined steadystate (SS) and' dynamic model of 'a proton exchangemembrane fuel cell (PEMFC) for use in distributedgeneration (DG) systems simulation. The SS fuel cellparameters associated with ohmic loss, activationoverpotential and concentration over potential which arenot easily accessible are estimated using a non-linear fittingof measured V-I fuel cell characteristics. Effect of fuel andair flow dynamics, electrical delay, and delay associatedwith fuel cell current reference feed back loop on thedynamics of the Nernst potential is modelled. The SS anddynamic models of the FC are then combined to establish aSIMULINK/SIMPOWER terminal model that can easily beinterfaced in DG systems simulations. The model SSresponse is verified using voltage measurements taken byslowly varying the load (current). Simulation results, usingSIMULINK/SIMPOWER, -are then presented todemonstrate that the model works as desired both for SSand dynamic loads. To demonstrate its applicability in DGSystems simulations, the model is used in long timesimulation of an example grid connected FC/Battery Hybridpower system.
