Traction for high speed electric trains will be by high voltage overhead supply; There are many operation ways by which energy use might be reduced Technical ways of reducing energy use include regeneration, improved electric motor design, reducing mass; It is important that the issues are examined from a system wide view The issue of speed v energy use can be addressed by calculating the time saving over a car for the same energy use; Increased use of electric power implies increased generation capacity (particularly for the UK and particularly if electricity in some form is to be used for cars); Decarbonising electricity supply needs more than the contribution of renewables: increased nuclear capacity is essential.
