CALCANEAL BURSA AND TARSAL SHEATH INFECTIONS

While not a common problem injuries involving the calcaneal bursa can be challenging diagnostically and therapeutically and in some instances prognosis is poor to grave. Often lameness is severe and chronic and management is costly. Wounds are the most common injury but lameness can result from injuries to the distal aspect of the gastrocnemius tendon (GT) at the attachment to a tuber calcanei (TC), radiolucent defects causing osteitis of a TC, dislocation (luxation) of the superficial digital flexortendon (SDFT) from the attachment on the TC and combination of the GT and SDFT (common calcaneal tendon) injury. In some instances management includes endoscopic examination of the intratendonous (subtendonous) calcaneal bursa (ICB) and debridement of the TC, whereas in others conservative management is best.
