Hydrocarbon Process Automation Applications (HPAA) utilize Real-time network connecting process instrumentations, controllers, and real-time logic control applications. Conventional practice is to dedicate a real-time network for HPAA and prevent other applications from utilizing the same infrastructure. This paper addresses the co-existence of non-HP AA traffic with real-time HPAA applications. Empirical data for an implemented HPAA case study a long with network simulation will be used to illustrate the interdependency of application performance, traffic mix, and potential areas of improvements. The outcomes of this effort demonstrate the co-existence of non-HP AA with HPPA HPAA traffic, given special considerations (i.e., bandwidth utilization, number of applications, etc.) in a converged IP network with Best Effort (BE) Quality of Service (QoS) settings.
