A method for processing telegrams in an automation network 100 provides that a master participant 105 is designed to encrypt telegrams at least partially and to output them to a slave participant 110. The reception logic 410 is designed when a telegram at least partially encrypted by the master subscriber 105 is present at the input port 400 of the slave subscriber 110 to forward an encrypted part of the at least partially encrypted telegram to the decryption unit 415. The decryption unit 415 is designed to decrypt the encrypted part of the at least partially encrypted telegram with a key and to forward it to the processing unit 425. The processing unit 425 is designed to process the decrypted part of the at least partially encrypted telegram. If an unencrypted telegram from the master subscriber 105 is present at the input port 400, the receiving logic 410 is designed to forward the unencrypted telegram to the processing unit 425 and the processing unit 425 is designed to process the unencrypted telegram.
