Marine Casualty Investigation, the new Australian TransportSafety Bureau

On 1 July 2009 the Australian Transport Safety Bureau (ATSB) became a statutoryagency, completely independent of the Commonwealth Government's marine policy andsafety regulatory agencies. This is one of many important government reforms affectingAustralia's marine transport industry. The paper discusses the change in governance for theATSB, the future directions of the agency and takes a look some investigations which werepivotal in instigating the change.
