Evaluation of the wake and waves produced by a ship hull has formed an important part of the ship design process for over 100 years. This is illustrated in this paper which compares and contrasts the wake and waves generated by two ship hulls, separated by 100 years, but sharing the same illustrious name: 'HMS Queen Elizabeth'. The wake and wave patterns generated by the World War One fast battleship and the modern aircraft carrier have been obtained using Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD). Calculations of the viscous wake and wave pattern for the 'bare hulls' have been obtained using advanced CFD techniques which have been used at QinetiQ Haslar for a number of years. Advanced turbulence models and near wall numerical models have been used to provide predictions of drag. Recent methods for the verification and validation techniques which are required to provide trust and confidence in the results obtained from the CFD methods are briefly described.
