Post-Treatment Optimization for Orange County Water District’s Groundwater Replenishment System

Orange County Water District (OCWD) has implemented its Groundwater Replenishment (GWR) System that produces purified water at its Advanced Water Purification Facility (AWPF) through microflitration (MF) membranes, reverse osmosis (RO) membranes, and ultra violet (UV)/hydrogen peroxide disinfection for groundwater injection. The purified water from the AWPF is injected into groundwater aquifers to minimize seawater intrusion and to replenish local groundwater supplies. Initial expansion of OCWD’s GWR System to a production capacity of 100 million gallons per day (mgd) provided opportunities to enhance the treatment processes at the AWPF including incorporating energy recovery devices on the new RO units, pilot testing a new lime slurry feed system, and providing flow equalization to maximize production. This paper will focus primarily on pilot test efforts to improve the reliability and flexibility of post-treatment operations at the AWPF.
