In the North American pulp & paper industry, the most common chlorine dioxide production process is a vacuum-type generator that uses methanol as a reducing agent and produces an acidic saltcake, (sodium sesquisulphate, Na3H(SO4)2). However for a variety of reasons - such as cost of neutralization or sodium-sulphur balance in the kraft recovery cycle - a mill may desire a process that makes neutral saltcake. The old sodium chloride-based chemistry of the 1970's produced a neutral saltcake but also produced a considerable amount of chlorine, which is not allowed today. A hydrogen peroxide-based reducing agent produces neutral saltcake without the undesirable chlorine byproduct and without requiring an additional mechanical process to convert the saltcake.
