Solid Oxide Fuel Cells (SOFC's) are operated at high temperature, which can limit the selection of materials for cell and module components and their use in quick start-up operation for applications such as APU's. Thus far, many materials have been investigated to realize high performance electrolytes and electrodes for SOFC's at lower temperatures (1-3). Use of an SOFC with a microtubular design has also been proposed for lowering the operating temperature, since it can realize a high performance cell and module, with high volumetric power density (4-6). Micro-tubular SOFC's have been examined for a number of years, however only recently have they been considered for portable applications, due to their excellent ability to thermal cycle and ability to withstand high thermal and mechanical stresses. In this paper we will examine the electrochemical performance of these micro-tubular SOFC's, using a ceria-based cell.
