The Liquid Tin Anode solid oxide fuel cell (LTA-SOFC) was invented as a direct carbon fuel cell with a demonstrated capability for direct fuel conversion using virtually any carbonaceous fuels. DOD's one fuel policy requires tanks, trucks, helicopters, planes and virtually all field power generation operate on logistic fuels. DOD has largely focused on reforming technology of logistic fuels for use in fuel cells. Logistic fuels such as JP-8 and NATO F-76 are very difficult to reform because they contain high levels of sulfur, up to 3,000 ppm and 1% respectively, and they are made of complex hydrocarbons. The LTA-SOFC is a direct logistic fuel conversion fuel cell and does not require fuel processing or reforming or water. Sulfur and carbon are fuel not a poison in LTA-SOFC. LTA-SOFC remains today as the only known direct logistic fuel JP-8 fuel cell. Its versatility and fuel flexibility allows applications ranging from small compact sub-kilowatt portable/ mobile power units to stationary MW power plants.
