Metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) are a class of crystalline materials consisting metal-based nodes and organic linkers. By judicious choice of building blocks, MOFs with ultrahigh specific surface areas have been synthesized. This has pushed the limit of practical sorption based gas storage technologies, e.g., molecular hydrogen and natural gas. Indeed, Toyota will start selling hydrogen fueled vehicles in California in early 2015. Forward looking, Mercedes Benz is pursuing the use of MOFs in hydrogen storage systems for next generation fuel cell vehicles.
