Despite the growing interest in using electrical energy in the transportation sector, it is expected that widespread, substantive changes to existing energy and transportation infrastructure will require a substantial period of time. In the interim, the increasing demand for liquid transportation fuels and the diminishing availability of crude oil will make alternative hydrocarbon sources more likely to be actively exploited rather than kept as fossil fuel reserves. Oil shale, which is already an important energy source in a few countries, could be used to supplement crude oil supplies. In the western United States, large oil shale reserves exist and have been considered for utilization in the past when the crude oil supply has been threatened.
