Recent initiatives in the industrial production of methyl methacrylate involve coupling homogeneous and heterogeneous catalytic processes that results in a superior atom economy compared to the conventional acetocyanohydrin process. This communication concentrates on the heterogeneous stage and specifically uses a combination of infrared spectroscopy, inelastic neutron scattering, DFT calculations and temperature-programmed mass spectrometry to investigate the interaction of methyl propanoate on silica.
