The concept design of hull form and selection of propulsion system are strategic procedure in the beginning stage of the vessel design. Decision of hull form is more complicate procedure if ship is operating in ice and ice free region simultaneously. The ice types and operation routes of the ship give an effect on the hull form design. The selection of propulsion system and propeller types is important processes as well to avoid propeller and ice interaction and to increase the efficiency of the propulsion. The decision of full load and ballast draft of the vessel are also one of the major design factors in ice breaking vessel. The suitable hull form according to the ice types (pack ice, brash ice, rubble ice, level ice and ice ridge etc.) will be recommended in this paper. The hull form combined propulsion system will be evaluated according to the operation field. Two drafts and two operation fields make plenty of design cases. It's very difficult to satisfy the entire design requirement. The simplification and unification of procedure are required in the draft decision. One idea for the draft will be presented.
