In the code EN 1993-4-1 it is assumed that the extension of the cylindrical shell of the silo below the level on which a hopper is attached to the shell (referred to as a skirt), under certain conditions, makes the upper part of the shell to behave as in a state of uniform meridian compressive stress distribution, even for discretely supported shells. The paper presents numerical analyses proving that this assumption is incorrect for a silo shell supported in a discrete manner. This is a very significant issue since the usage of a simplified method presented in the code can lead to reevaluation of a shell capacity due to its instability.
