This paper presents a new multi-mode higher order shell element for analysis of wave propagation problems in shell structures. The element has been formulated based on an extended form of the displacement field in comparison to the classical shell theory having six degrees of freedom and taking into account transverse deformation. The accuracy of the proposed element have been analysed by a comparison of the dispersion curves obtained based on the current formulation with the dispersion curves obtained for the exact solution. The robustness and effectiveness of the shell element developed by the authors has been successfully proven by analysis of relative errors for the fundamental symmetric (membrane) and anti-symmetric (bending) wave propagation modes.
