The disinfection and oxidation performance of various geometries of UV reactors was assessed using computational fluid dynamics (CFD). Although the input parameters such as flow rate, lamp power and transmittance were identical, the dose distributions differed greatly between the reactors. Hence, the differences between the disinfection of Bacillus subtilis were significant, indicating that hydraulics has a big impact on the disinfection efficacy of the system. The oxidation performance merely depended on the mean dose of the UV system, showing that oxidation was less sensitive to the local hydraulics. From the large number of CFD calculations, general design considerations were drawn that can improve the efficacy of UV systems.
