Comparisons of physical properties of various unsaturated polyester and vinyl ester resins from the same manufacturer and multiple resin manufacturers are made everyday. Analyzing the data appears simple but how the products are gelled, cured, and post cured have a large effect on the resulting properties. This paper will discuss the effect of commonly used peroxide packages to gel the resin, methods of gelling, curing, and post-curing on the measured physical properties of nonreinforced, non-thixotropic unsaturated polyester and vinyl ester resin castings. Data on castings made without reinforcement or filler was used to help illustrate and highlight the differences these factors play in the physical properties.
