We evaluated postural responses of backward balance loss during walking. The backward balance loss was induced by a split-belt treadmill so that the belt speed rapidly decreased at heel strike. We found two patterns of response according to the velocity gap of the perturbations. We show the differences of the two patterns for trajectories of body centre of mass, angle of joints, and EMG. It is suggested that the postural control system predicts backward falling according to the COM state, and modulates the swing movement to avoid a backward falling.
