An initiation of human voluntary movement needs several hundreds milliseconds because of complex computation of coordinate transformation and motor planning. On the other hand, quick sensorimotor reaction mechanisms, such as stretch reflexes, are also equipped in our motor control system. Such reflex mechanisms might be considered as a simple and stereotyped response to a stimulus. However, it has been revealed in more recent studies that somatosensory reflex response can be modulated according to tasks and environments, and motor cortex is involved in organizing such modulation, suggesting a reflex contribution on high level online motor control. It has also been found that visually-guided movement is regulated in real time although the vision system is pretty far from the motor system, compared to the somatosensory system. I will introduce our studies regarding these quick online sensorimotor control, which are implicitly modulated by tasks and environments.
