Side lever knapsack sprayers are used extensively in many countries to apply pesticides but early and long-term concerns about the performance of this equipment prompted the need for an International Standard to encourage the adoption of minimal acceptable requirements to the user. This Standard, ISO 19932, was introduced in 2006 but there have been few claims by commercial or independent bodies that its requirements are met. The purpose of this study was to better understand the current global state of the art. Twelve sprayers which were most extensively used and considered to be locally the best in 5 major world areas - Africa, Asia, Europe, Middle East and Latin America - were locally bought - without the knowledge of the manufacturer - and sent to Julius-K hn-Insti-tut (JKI, former BBA) in Germany for testing according to ISO 19932.
