The paper discusses the evolution of hovercraft technology. After more than 50 years of dedicated development, the capabilities for their design and construction can be considered mature. The paper describes the early history and the progress made, particularly in the USA over the last 15 or so years, for improving the operational capabilities and affordability of these craft. This progress is timely in view of recent worldwide interest in acquiring fast assault and logistic connector craft for the rapid movement of military equipment. The paper reviews the breakthroughs achieved in improving vehicle powering, seakeeping, maneuvering, reliability, methods for design, and for reducing cost. This has been achieved through the development of innovative systems for new cushion seals, maneuvering devices, lift-air supply fans, airscrew propellers, and unique whole-vessel design software. Numerous craft have benefited significantly from these advances in technology as discussed in the paper.
