After decades of design evolution, the architecture of a modern car with internal combustion engine has converted into a rather common set of inner structural solutions. What is happening now as the energy source is replaced from petrol to electric power is that the differences in design solutions again diverges. SSAB has been working with a design concept with aim to show how high strength steels can be utilized for the most important load paths with regard to battery electric vehicles. It also shows how optimized geometries leads to vast improvements, which is necessary when steel is competing against aluminium. This paper covers following: A short general overview of the EV Concept; How AHSS can be 3D roll formed into a bottom structure; An optimized floor cross beam for minimizing intrusion; An optimized energy absorbing beam for the sill.
