The fatigue life estimation technique has been successfully used to estimate fatigue cracking mode and for parameter studies of design improvement for the side step and body mount joint. Application of the technique can be extended to other types of clamped joints. The FEA local joint model contains all the geometry details, nonlinear material properties under cyclic loading, clamp load, contacts between parts, continuum element meshing with membrane elements to catch high stresses/strains on the surfaces, therefore can provide more accurate stresses/strains for fatigue life estimations. Solid meshed joint models in the side step model give relatively higher fatigue lives, and better correlations to test results. The FEA estimated fatigue cracking mode correlates to the mode from bench tests of the joint. In the future, the technique will be continuously modified and improved by means of more investigations on fatigue methodology usage, FEA technique usage and correlations to tests.
