As stress in the thin walls of structure increases, the stress distribution gets uneven and at some point the wall starts to buckle locally. This limits the load capacity of section. Which limits the weight reduction potential with advanced high strength steels. Finite strip method is special version of Finite element method. The longitudinal deformation is assumed to be trigonometric function. This significantly reduces degree of freedom. As a result the FSM is quicker and more robust in calculating buckling modes. Based on our comparison with physical test and FE analysis we conclude the FSM predictions are similar to FE prediction. We believe that such simple methods will be very useful in evaluating 2D sections. This is important particularly with increased use of AHSS.
