It is a well known fact that many pigments, especially organic and carbon black pigment powders need to be dispersed extensively to achieve satisfactory development of coloristic properties. For some coating manufacturers, this is a difficult task. Sophisticated milling equipment has been developed to provide the shear necessary to properly disperse pigments. What these machines have in common is the need to run for long periods of time, resulting in high energy consumption, in order to grind the pigments to the desired fineness and optimum color development. Since pigment powders often create a lot of dust, different colors have to be handled in different parts of production. In some case, separate equipment is maintained to avoid cross contamination of colors, e.g. carbon black.
